Role of the Board of Governors
Teachers TV is funded by the Department for Children Schools and Families (DCSF), but is editorially independent, as required by the Communications Act 2003. Education Digital 2, the service supplier, has direct responsibility for commissioning programming, scheduling and transmitting the channel – in short, for all aspects of the services daily operations.
The Teachers TV Board of Governors is an advisory non-departmental public body, accountable to the Secretary of State for Children, Schools and Families. The Board does not possess executive powers and does not award funds to the channel. Instead, it acts as a high-powered advisory body that informs decisions taken by the Secretary of State. In order to ensure the service remains editorially the Teachers TV Board of Governors has been established with a remit to:
- Uphold the editorial independence of Teachers TV.
- Advise the Department on the best practices of a UK public broadcasting service.
- Advise the Department on ways that Teachers TV could develop so that it best meets the need of its audience.
- Approve the supplier’s Statement of Content Policy.
- Help ensure the Teachers TV supplier is held accountable for the public funds it receives via an annual performance review.
- To act as an ambassador for the service.
Full details of the Board's aim and objectives can be seen in its Terms of Reference.
Further information on the Board's role in upholding editorial independence can be found in the Department’s Statement on Editorial Independence.
